Enewetak Atoll nuclear blast radius

Last updated

Enewetak hosted Ivy Mike, the first thermonuclear test, in 1952. This page loads that 10.4 Mt surface-burst preset. The atoll is tiny against a megaton disk.

Educational estimate only. Blast and heat rings use simplified yield scaling. They ignore terrain, weather, shielding, and weapon design. Casualty counts use WorldPop 2020 residents on an approximately 1 km grid and ignore time of day, commuting, shelter, and evacuation. This is not a targeting or civil-defense tool. About the model.

Aim point: Enewetak Atoll, Marshall Islands · Weapon: Ivy Mike (10.4 Mt, surface burst)

Ground ranges for Ivy Mike (10.4 Mt, surface burst) in this simulator.
Effect Ground range What the model means
Fireball 3.2 km (2.0 mi) Maximum luminous radius
20 psi 5.5 km (3.4 mi) Heavy destruction
5 psi 12.2 km (7.6 mi) Most buildings collapse
Thermal 30.5 km (18.9 mi) 3rd-degree burns
1 psi 28.8 km (17.9 mi) Windows shatter
Rings scaled to 1 psi. Yellow fireball, red 20 psi, orange 5 psi, gold thermal, blue 1 psi. Not a map of buildings.

Casualty estimate at this pin

People on the WorldPop 2020 grid inside this scenario’s 1 psi ring. Rounded educational estimate, not a forecast.
Estimated deaths 461
Estimated injuries 386
Residents inside 1 psi 1,103

What the rings cover

Fireball and heavy-destruction rings swallow the local islets in this model. 5 psi and 1 psi reach far across open ocean. Almost nobody sits on the 2020 population grid inside those disks.

Ivy Mike was a cryogenic experimental device, not a deliverable bomb. The yield and surface burst are what this simulator can show. The actual Mike crater and the later cleanup are not in the mesh.

Marshall Islanders’ displacement and later contamination are the human history. WorldPop 2020 on this pin will look almost empty. That emptiness is an artefact of where tests were sited, not a measure of harm done.

Bikini’s Castle Bravo page is the next megaton reconstruction. Together they are why Pacific atolls appear in every serious nuke map.
