Named weapon
W76-2 blast radius (8 kt)
Last updated
W76-2 is a low-yield Trident warhead preset at 8 kt. It exists on this list so ‘tactical’ and ‘strategic’ are not just words: the rings are visibly smaller than Little Boy.

Educational estimate only. Blast and heat rings use simplified yield scaling. They ignore terrain, weather, shielding, and weapon design. Casualty counts use WorldPop 2020 residents on an approximately 1 km grid and ignore time of day, commuting, shelter, and evacuation. This is not a targeting or civil-defense tool. About the model.
| Effect | Ground range | What the model means |
|---|---|---|
| Fireball | 207 m (678 ft) | Maximum luminous radius |
| 20 psi | 680 m (2,231 ft) | Heavy destruction |
| 5 psi | 1.5 km (4,836 ft) | Most buildings collapse |
| Thermal | 1.5 km (5,085 ft) | 3rd-degree burns |
| 1 psi | 3.4 km (2.1 mi) | Windows shatter |
Open-source reporting places W76-2 in the low-single-digit to ~8 kt class. This globe uses 8 kt as a round named yield. It is not an official specification sheet.
An 8 kt airburst still produces lethal inner zones in a downtown in this model. ‘Low yield’ is relative to megaton weapons, not to a city block.
Compare with W76-1 (90 kt) on the same city to see the workhorse Trident yield next to the low-yield variant.
