W87 blast radius (300 kt)
Last updated
W87 is a 300 kt ICBM warhead preset. On a compact city the 1 psi ring becomes metropolitan. On Los Angeles it is still not ‘the whole basin.’
Educational estimate only. Blast and heat rings use simplified yield scaling. They ignore terrain, weather, shielding, and weapon design. Casualty counts use WorldPop 2020 residents on an approximately 1 km grid and ignore time of day, commuting, shelter, and evacuation. This is not a targeting or civil-defense tool. About the model.
| Effect | Ground range | What the model means |
|---|---|---|
| Fireball | 881 m (2,891 ft) | Maximum luminous radius |
| 20 psi | 2.3 km (1.4 mi) | Heavy destruction |
| 5 psi | 4.9 km (3.1 mi) | Most buildings collapse |
| Thermal | 7.0 km (4.3 mi) | 3rd-degree burns |
| 1 psi | 11.4 km (7.1 mi) | Windows shatter |
Open sources associate W87 with Minuteman III. This page is the yield card, not a force structure brief.
Three hundred kilotons is twenty Little Boys in energy and roughly 2.7 times the blast radius in cube-root scaling. That gap is the literacy this list is for.
Named yields above 100 kt remain selectable on the free globe; typed custom yields above 100 kt are Pro.
